ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS AT CRATERS OF THE MOON
January 23, 2018

Utah is lucky to have gorgeous landscapes waiting for you to have outdoor adventures year-round. Craters of the Moon National Park is a short drive from Pinewood Estates. It is particularly striking with the contrast of deep snow against the dark, jagged rocks. While motorized travel is not allowed in winter, you can still explore parts of the park.
Skiers will find mostly level terrain and gentle hills on the maintained 4.7-mile loop trail. One steep hill can easily be avoided for novices. The entire loop generally takes two to four hours to ski, and there is no charge to do so.
If snowshoeing is more your pace, you’ll love the 1-mile Snowshoe Loop Trail. The park also conducts guided Snowshoe Walks on Saturdays in January and February. No experience is necessary to join, but you do have to sign up with the park ahead of time. Snowshoes are available for loan at the visitor center.
You’ll definitely want to be prepared when visiting Craters of the Moon, as the weather can change rapidly. Wind is common also. Make sure to carry extra clothing, water, and snacks. While you can venture off the groomed tracks, you’ll need to be cautious. The lava surface under the snow is uneven and may contain cracks and sharp edges. For more information on visiting the park and the activities available, visit the park’s website here.
