MAKING HOMEMADE PLAYDOUGH WITH THE KIDS
November 10, 2017

When the kids are stuck inside due to the weather, it’s difficult to find things to entertain them without always resorting to electronics. Getting them in the kitchen to bake cookies is always a great idea, but with the holidays coming up, the kitchen might be a little occupied. So, consider making a different kind of dough with your kids! Playdough is easy to make and inexpensive. It can also be made into any color you can come up with.
You can make an easy playdough with just one cup of flour, ¼ cup of salt, ½ cup of warm water, and 3-5 drops of food coloring. Here’s the recipe. Here are six other recipes to try. Some of these are more complex and require more ingredients. Some also require cooking on the stovetop. Experiment with the recipes to find a texture you like. The best thing about playdough is having more colors anyway!
Store your homemade playdough in a covered, plastic container or in a plastic storage bag for several months. The dough may sweat, but that is easily fixed by adding a little flour. In addition to food coloring, you can also use tempera powder or Kool-Aid packets to color it, just make sure if you use the tempera powder that the kids don’t eat the dough.
